Second-level Certification

An easy way to eat healthy is to choose vegetables.  The Level 2 Certification Young Women get to pick the vegetables in the garden.  The vegetables can be used for nutritious camp meals.  There are trash bags in the garden box to collect the vegetables in.  Gently place the fruit in the bag so it doesn't get bruised, then take what is pick to the kitchen.

Beans are ready when they are about as long as a finger.  Used the scissors in the garden box to cut them just above the bean.

Can you find any tomatoes that are ready to be picked?  They need to be picked when they are a sunset color. It will take about 3 days for the tomatoes to be ready to eat, like in the next picture.
Tomatoes can be removed by gently twisting the tomato around and around in the same direction until it comes off.
Pick the bad fruit also and throw it away.  This encourages the plants to keep producing.
Cucumbers are ready to be picked when they are 4-6 inches long.  Look carefully under the leaves.  They like to hide.  You can twist and twist and twist in the same direction or use the scissors in the garden box to cut the stem that holds them to the plant.

To harvest Swiss Chard use scissors and cut off the biggest leaves.  This is good to add to salad.

It will continue to grow all summer.

Squash is ready when it's about twice the size of the one in this picture.  Use the scissors and cut the stem where the squash is attached to the plant.

Everyone should break a leaf off the Lemon balm.  It’s on the end closest to the bathhouse.  It smells so good!  It’s good to flavor water.  Just wash it and drop it in.

Growing a garden is a great way to enjoy being outside, exercising and eating healthy!  Fruits and vegetables are delicious, low in calories, and helps us learn, and gives us energy.
